It weaves together personal and collective vulnerabilities, confronting how safety is felt, lost, and constructed within private, public, and political spheres. The messages remain open and non didactic, it subtly prompt answers, directions and feelings. ‘I am’ in black and ‘I am’ in white appear as bold logo like forms on perpendicular (right angles)&nbsp; walls. I am: Light within light, I am: dark within dark. Block, Berlin.Continuing and expanding upon the narrative arc of Stark’s recent exhibitions, the conceptual works range from participatory installation to paintings and performance that explore concepts of art, money, language and love, and the interaction within the intersections.Love is a universally shared experience and a uniquely individual experience. The meaning of “I love you” is formed by the viewer in their experience, understanding and projected meaning of the title(s). The exhibition LOVE x 100 was first exhibited at Lobe Block in Berlin, 2022. The position of emerging artist is confronted in Stark’s premiere solo show exploring art, money, language and love, and the interaction within and in-between the intersections. It questions the concept of artistic production and value, monetary and other, in the contemporary art world. It confronts love in it’s varying forms, and in doing so the viewer. For sale are a series of conceptual artworks, each consist of the “I love you” painting, the museum label and the LOVE4SALE questionnaire. Each artwork is an original, the paintings are created with the same technique, yet the artwork title projects context and meaning onto the painting. The museum label – which should always be displayed with the painting – contains the title, year, medium and size. It also contains a set of varying prices for the artwork, all laser cut into the acrylic panel. The price of the artwork varies depending on the buyer themselves, such as they often do in today’s society. To decide the price of the work of art, the buyer is can fill-out the LOVE4SALE questionnaire, thereby activating the participatory artwork. There is one questionnaire for Individuals and one for Institutions and Businesses. And yet the repetition of this phrase can take on many understandings. It can seem sweet, romantic, painful, move into a mantra or it can begin to lose feeling and meaning. The phrase can take on countless forms and, depending on how it is said and the context, it is the emotion behind the phrase that gives it its true meaning. The artwork explores this in the different tonality of voice in the different channels. The phrase is repeated, but nuances occur within each channel, different situations arise in the one’s mind. What is the meaning and feeling of each phrase said? Does it seem real, or theatrical? Is it acting, is it a lie or the truth? There are subtle differences in the emotional weight of “I love you” across different languages, all unique within their own context. Every language, every culture, every family, every relationship, every person develops a unique connection with “I love you”, “Seni seviyorum”, “Ich liebe Dich”. The installation consisted of Flowers (mixed) and Attached, a video performance shown on an iMac computer behind the reception.Video performance, ‘Attached’, is shown looped on an iMac which sits behind the reception desk answering, questioning, complementing, critiquing. The viewer is invited to take the place of the receptionist, sitting down to view and observe the person speaking to them. The artwork expresses duality: connection/disconnection, presence/absence, communication/miscommunication. Employing rhythm, repetition and onomatopoeia, the work explores&nbsp; the possibilities within a simplistic, open language. The language plays with writing, re-writing, changing the meaning and understanding of what is being said. Relatable situations, work and life, failures and successes, which is it: either, neither, both? Or are all simultaneously true and false? The work oscillates between these states, flowing erratically through the role of the artist, curator, collector, lover, depressive. The shot changes in expression but the picture remains the same.
